Constraints on Negative Prefixation in Polish Sign Language
The aim of this article is to describe a negative prefix, NEG-, in Polish Sign Language (PJM) which appears to be indigenous to the language. This is of interest given the relative rarity of prefixes in sign languages. Prefixed PJM signs were analyzed on the basis of both a corpus of texts signed by 15 deaf PJM users who are either native or near-native signers, and material including a specifi...
متن کاملDetecting Verbal Participation in Diathesis Alternations
We present a method for automatically identifying verbal participation in diathesis alternations. Automatically acquired subcategorization frames are compared to a hand-crafted classification for selecting candidate verbs. The minimum description length principle is then used to produce a model and cost for storing the head noun instances from a training corpus at the relevant argument slots. A...
متن کاملDictionary-driven analysis of Japanese verbal alternations
We present a method for extracting verbal (diathesis) alternations from a valency dictionary, based on comparison of selectional restrictions. The quality of match between selectional restrictions is evaluated according to an entropy-based measure with backing-off facility. We use the proposed method to derive a provisional listing of the range and distribution of verbal alternations in Japanese.

In addition to the transitive and intransitive, ergative languages of the Polynesian group commonly have another type of construction, which is called middle. The middle construction stands somewhere in between the transitive and the intransitive. It involves two arguments, but crucially is syntactically intransitive. The subject appears in ABS, not ERG. The logical object appears in some obliq...
متن کاملAntipassive, clefting, and specificity
In this paper, I show how these specificity effects are accounted for straightforwardly in the analysis of Tagalog morphosyntax and phrase structure proposed by Aldridge (in preparation). Under this analysis, absolutive DPs receive a presuppositional interpretation because they are located outside VP at LF and mapped to the restrictive clause, in the sense of Diesing (1992). Oblique DPs, on the...
